Leek seedlings

I have just cleared an area of ground where leeks grew last year only to find lots and lots of little leek seedlings.
What is the best way to move/replant these?

Can i dig up little clumps of them and transplant them into pots until they reach pencil thickness?

You certainly can put clumps in pots, or you can just move them to a spare area in the ground. Did your leeks go to seed then?

Thanks Rustylady, yes my garden got very neglected last year and the leeks and lots more went to seed....i now have hundreds of leek seedlings....i hope they'll turn out to be good leeks!

And can I just ask, as I bought a pot of leek seedlings earlier this year, do they have to each reach pencil thickness before I can plant them out? They're much thinner, and the pot is quite crowded...

My leeks did a weird but similar thing last year: one leek developed into three or four smaller ones. Never seen it before. All tasted fine, but I certainly only planted one!

I planted mine out before they were pencil thickness - still like grass (was sick of them taking up too much room in my house), had lovely thick leeks for xmas
