Is it safe to plant out tomatoes??

Hey guys I spent alot of time on growing my tomatoes seedlings and now they are at the stage when they need transplanting outside. Is it a good time now to plant out, its roughly about 8-10 degrees at night? Thanks alot!

Also if it is a good time, what part of the day and conditions are best for a good transplant?

Hi Deltz,

We have had a couple of late frosts over Wiltshire way. Damaged a couple of my potato plants. I have accidentally left mine outside overnight once or twice and they have been ok. I would personally wait another couple of weeks before I leave them outside properly.

Thanks for the reply, I live in east london so weather seems slightly warmer here at nights, whats the minimum night temperature you would wait for till you transplant?

I've put mine out and I'm not tooooo far away - know others locally that have had theirs out for a week or two.... Mind you - I'm not an expert! Have you hardened them off? That means getting them used to it by bringing them out just for the day and then back in at night for a couple of weeks?

Thanks for that, i've been hardening them off on and off for about a week, its been pretty windy for the past 2 days so I've left them inside my little shed. Would a week hardening off be enough you think?

I've put mine out today, and I'm in Essex, which isn't too far from you as the crow flies. I normally wait until June 1st, but reckon the frosts are long gone now.

Cue week of sharp frosts.

Wait until the wind goes away I think you will be OK then, I have four hanging baskets that will go out on a south facing wall as soon as the wind drops.

I put mine out just over a week ago and they are doing fine, looking really good which I am happy with.

I've been hardening off my tomatoes in preparation for putting them outside permanently. I've taken them out of the greenhouse during the day, & put them back in at night.

The last couple of days have been so windy I've left them in the greenhouse all day. Will this soften them up again? Will I need to start the hardening off process all over again?

Our overnight temperatures are still only averaging 5C, so almost everything that should be out is still under cover. We put tomatoes out mid-May last year, and they got frosted.

No you won't have to start over just give them a couple of extra days.

Thanks. TBH, I think they might have been ok, because they're still quite small (no flowers yet). I put them out yesterday morning, then bottled it and put them back in.

Always started putting out Toms, Cus and Peppers out on the allotment around early June just down the road in Ilford when I was living there, that was my parents timing based on 35 years growing on that site- If I remember correctly they did get caught early June with a frost one year and they then staggered the plantings over 2 or 3 weeks as a bit of insurance against a late frost.

Thanks for all the help guys, I think ill take the risk and plant out tomorrow evening. I do have backups for every tomato plant so tomato transplants here I come!

Hi, Make sure they are well staked in this windy weather. Weather has been realy mild up here in Liverpool.

I've got about 15 tom plants in buckets and have had them out for about a month now. All doing fine.
