    Interesting reading

The seed potatoes I planted this year (Kestrel and Sharpe's Express) are just thinking about flowering! I am excited and can't wait to see what crops have grown (there's only 3 pots!). Unfortunately I ran out of compost about 3 weeks ago and so stopped earthing them up before the bags/pots were full. But the green growth is very abundant and healthy looking so I am still hopeful for a good crop (or a crop full stop!).

I was just going to ask about this. The whole point of growing your own is to become more self-sustainable right? It seems strange to keep buying new seed potatoes when you could chuck a few of your home-grown spuds back into the ground (obviously not the same ground).

What about 'moochers' as my grandad used to call 'volunteers'? You know, when you think you have lifted every single potato in your crop, use the ground for something else (eg onions) and lo and behold you get potatoes where you didn't expect them? I've had those and left them just to see what happens - you get a crop. Maybe less than from a seed potato. Where do seed potatoes come from anyway?
