The german authorities have now confirmed an outbreak of a illness linked to E-coli has killed 9 people and left nearly 300 ill.

One source confirmed as Spanish grown organic cumbers. They are also investigating Dutch cumbers.

Not on sale in the UK

The Food Standards Agency has confirmed that the offending cucumbers have not been on sale at any outlets in the UK.

I prefer to look to my own well being remember the safe eggs. SWMBO had dutch cumber in fridge when we checked, it is now in the bin. Most likely a waste but for the sake of a cumber why take the chance.

Helga, yes you can transfer e.coli yourself if you do not follow good practice like keeping raw meats etc away from salad etc or if you don't wash your hands when moving between the two.

I am actually really glad you posted this! They are recommending people stay away from cucumbers, raw tomatoes and lettuce - and as a veggie going to meat-loving Bavaria I was planning to just have the salads. Guess that plan is scratched!

Might have to survive on pretzels and beer now....hmmm, what a shame

Pretzels & Bavarian beer don't sound to bad to me lol. When the story first broke it was fairly low key and with grapes going into Europe this weekend I thought it worth the post.

Its bound to put a nagging doubt in the back of anyones mind buying cucumbers though.....................
Hope it doesn't affect growers who rely heavily on there profits from this seasonal harvest.

E coli; never a better time to GYO cucumber & salad

Just looked at the BBC news website and there's a problem with E coli outbreak in Europe that might be associated with cucumber tomatos and salads.
Never really heard of such a thing. I think it may be down to infected people preparing food for others?
Spain are going off their head because Russia have banned produce from there.

Perhaps we should stick a few more seeds in folks?
(personally I don't like cucumbers anyway!)
