This seasons two sisters

Last year i planted squash beneath corn,i had moderate sucess as th squash were just planted at the ends of the beds.

This year i have planted three buternuts down the middle of a 10ft x 4ft bed i have planted just 8 sweetcorn with a generous spacing of 2ft+ between plants

Ill keep a log to see what works and what doesnt

I've just planted some more sweetcorn - have gone for 12" between them (packet says 6, I tried 7 inches last year - lower cobs weren't fully pollinated). My other plot I've gone for 8.. thinking about it though, 2' between them sounds good as it'll give you room for the fruit to develop.

I'm planning on planting squash beneath mine, but only because i'm short on space!

Im hoping to do something like this too! My corn is TINY still though! Started off in loo rolls... Was this a mistake? How big do they need to be before I can plant them out?.... I have masses of squash plants to put out around them! went a teensie bit mad!

Mine were 2" when I planted them out, only did as the taproot was poking out of the newspaper pots I made.

I've sown some more the other day.. 30th of May I think? Just to see

I've done courgettes under the sweetcorn for a few years now which seems to work well. I've hoping that some outdoor cucumbers which I've never grown before might do the same, as I seem to have forgotten to leave room for them! Oops!

I don't think I've ever had a second full size head from my sweetcorn even when hand pollinating the flower.

Mine are still 3 to a 4" pot about 12" high - I'll wait 'til they're 15 - 18" high before planting them out.

I have planted sweetcorn over my squash plants too!

Jelliebabe mine is only about 4 inches high... it's out though, taking its chances, and it does look as though it's growing... just very slowly. It is very very hot here though at the mo.

I planted mine out a couple of weeks ago, most are fine, but a couple haven't made it. I grew in loo rolls too. The squash look really good though. Watering in the dry weather has been essential, people who haven't kept up with it have lost most of their plants. The wind hasn't helped, our site is very open, being new we are just out in a field, no hedges planted around it yet as wind breaks. I'm a bit worried that it's now changed from SW to NE, so it will be cooler and still very dry.

I've for the first time put my courgettes and sweet corn in the same bed ..was going to add some beans but have run out of plants and seeds of the climbing variety...

I've popped one of my two butternut squash plants in with my sweetcorn in their mini polytunnel. It's 4'x4'. Do you think I could squeaze a second plant like a courgette in on the opposit corner or will that be puching things? The sweetcorn is about 2' high and I don't think the polytunnel is tall enough for them as it's about 4' high so I will have to take it off them at some point and then the squash/courgette can sprawl onto the paths.

We have planted squash under the sweetocrn for the past 3 years, the squashes give good ground cover, suppressing weeds and retaining moisture as well as giving 2 crops from the space. This year we've got 5 beds planted with '2 sisters', a total of 150 sweetcorn and 50 or so pumpkins and squash, hopefully again this year we will have a decnet harvest of both.

How many pumpkins do you put in a bed(what size are they?), Mrs D? I've 50 odd pumpkins ready to go out - planning on using most of them to cover most of an allotment to keep the weeds down beforE I hand it back

We space the pumpkins at 2' by 5', so in a large bed (10' by 10') we fit 10 pumpkins in, 2 rows, with 20 to 30 sweetcorn aswell. Its worked for us for the past 3 years, so we must be doing something right! lol
