This is one of my daughter's favourite veg, she loves it raw, so I've never cooked it. Raw it tastes a bit like turnip, so I would imagine it is probably similar if cooked. I usually plant seeds in modules, then plant out when they have their first true leaves. This is mainly due to losing too many seedlings to slugs when I sowed direct rather than any other reason. I haven't had any problems with germination, they are a brassica, and generally seem to come up as quickly as any of the others for me, and do not need a lot of warmth. Not much help really, but persevere if you like turnip. Sometimes I've seen them for sale, not often though. We had them in Germany, our friend served them raw in salads. They are more popular and well known there than here by the seems of it.I could not live without a garden, it is my place to unwind and recover, to marvel at the power of all growing things, even weeds!
Now a little Shrinking Violet.

We're growing it for the first time this year, only about 50% germination in cells, in a plastic greenhouse.
Never eaten if before and I'm hoping they taste more like broccoli than turnips, because I find turnips (white ones, not swedes) too bitter.

I've always sown it direct into the soil. Germination can be patchy - I think it depends on weather conditions at the time. It's fan-blimmin-tastic though!Whoever plants a garden believes in the future.

I got some free seeds with a magazine I had not heard of it before so planted them in a small container and they have all germinated and are doing really well. I have just taken a few out as they were a bit close together and not sure how much room they needed.
