  • Identifying Potatoes

I planted two lots of potatoes at the end of March some first earlies I think they were pentlands and some king edwards. I cannot remember which ones I planted in which bag is it possible to tell them apart? One has grown quite thick and bushy and I cannot see any flowers yet and the other has grown a lot taller and less bushy and looks like its starting to flower. Help

The earlies should certainly flower first. It's a good idea to keep a diary of what you planted, where you planted it and when you planted it. That should help in future years when deciding what where and when to plant.

One of my potatoes gave one single flower a few days ago... but no sign of any more! I am so impatient with eagerness to dig them up and see what is in there!

I am a very disorganised person but have got a gardening diary and do actually use it... invaluable!

Unfortunately not all potatoes flower. My 1st earlies haven't flowered so far (I'm already digging them), but my main crop is flowering.
If it's any help at all (and I've got different varieties so I'm not sure it will be any help) my 1st earlies are shorter and bushier than the main crop.
Perhaps try gently furtling in the bag and see where you've got potatoes!
Life is too short for drama & petty things!
So laugh insanely, love truly and forgive quickly!

Thanks for the advice the bag with the short bushy foliage that has not flowered is where I thought I had planted my first earlies so will have a dig around to see whats there. When the one with the tall foliage started to flower first I began to doubt what was in each bag.

Penland Javelin will have white flowers and King Edwards will have purple flowers.

                The British Potato Variety Database
you can look up the characteristics of the different varieties on this website, or even look up the varieties with different characteristics.
