went down the plot tonight and all my strawberries and asparagus had been nicked. The redcurrants looked a bit sparse as well. What would you do with them!

We've never really suffered from theft at our site, just a bit of damage to sheds now and again. Our committee made a big show of changing the padlock and everyone's keys: then they cut down the perimeter hedge to 3ft - it's now virtually a stepover. I ask you *rolleyes smiley

The redcurrants could be birds and the strawberries likewise along with a miriad of other hungry creatures. Have the asparagus crowns been nicked or have the new shoots been cut?

My allotment neighbour commented on how well my blackcurrants were doing and the next day when I went to pick em all the ripe ones had gone? Was going to have a word in his ear, but I've got a fancy its bird damage!

Annoying isn't it if you think it's human theft (actually I find animal theft annoying too ). I think I've had some stuff picked over the years but was very annoyed last July time when a group of teenagers (we found out who it was) where just cutting things up with a penknife, mainly immature stuff so they weren't even using it for the purpose it was for

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

I hate people that nick things just because they can or there envious of what you have. I wouldn't be able to put on here what I'd do to anyone caught nicking out of mi garden...I'd get banned. Hope you find out who it is or your produce that they nicked gives them the sh..s.

Some years ago a man I know of had all his onions nicked just before Goose Fair obviously bound for the hot dog trade. He reported the theft to the police and informed them at the same time that the onions had been sprayed with fungicide/pesticide and that they could be dangerous if eaten.

Result police tour all local estates with loud speaker van warning the people not to eat the onions on pain of death. He didn't get his onions back but I bet they weren't eaten either.

I am guilty of allotment theft.

There, I've said it. As a child, I stole from the local allotment.

In my defence, things were different then. Our idea of nicking was to pinch a carrot and eat it. I never vandalised anything or knowingly damaged anything.

But to whoever I nicked that carrot from, in about 1976, I'm really sorry.

OP, gutted for you. Especially the asparagus, as it takes such an investment of time.

thanks for support everyone, cant be bird damage as strawberries are on a long bed at chest height and netted, we've been eyeing up the biggest, fattest, nearly ripe ones over the weekend and all dissappeared. I cant imagine kids would take asparagus, cut professionally under the soil? It's looking like it could be another plot holder - a neighbour recently had 2 hinged wooden raised beds pinched, they were marked with a company name and were found about 50 yards away on another plot, I dont know how people have got the cheek.
Last year someone had his spuds pinched but they left the haulms in the ground wilting away!
