Tomato flowers fell off

My tomato plant was doing very well on my window sill. It gets sunlight later part of the day. Plant was growing very strong and getting big. But as the first truss of flowers opened, they fell off after a few days. The plant looked very healthy and green. What could cause the flowers to fall off?

I have now moved the plant in the garden. Is there anything else I can try?

mine did this too (all three of them! - two Sun Belles and one Sweet Millions). I was told to water regularly and as early in the day as I could, as oppposed to at night; give them a one-off feed (to feed again after tomatoes arrived); to keep them out of drafts/the wind as much as was feasible and to just have some patience.

My tomatoes ended up growing past the bit where the blossoms fell off and soon grew new trusses above that point. The new blossoms stayed on and now they do have some tomatoes with more coming in every day. The lowest flowers on each branch dropped all but about two of their blossoms and now even they are about to flower.

Good luck with them - the thing that worked for me the best was just waiting (as hard as that is!) and crossing my fingers!

Blossom drop is something that happens from time to time, some say that the weather is the cause, but they soon get over it without any long lasting effects.

Are they in big enough pots? if they've not enough nutrients, toms won't try.

The pots are flower buckets. Full with a mix of grow bag and extra compost.

You could try either try giving them a tickle with a paint brush or spraying with water to encourage the fruit to set.....

Most toms will benefit from a little disturbance to help fertilization. I like to gently tap the top of the support cane as I pass.

Sall, I can't believe you had flower buckets on your windowsill. How big are your plants?

I think Binley is right - I was lead to believe misting the flowers helps to prevent this. I know when I'm using the spray-hose they get a good drenching on the plants too and it, at least, doesn't STOP them from fruiting :-)

They were probably far too hot behind glass on your windowcill.

Tomatoes will not set if the temperatures are too high.

They should be Ok now
