How to predict squash/pumpkin growth direction

btw I checked on my sugar pie pumpkin today (in daylight and fully clothed) and it is going in the same direction as the first leaf........

I may have thought it handy a few days ago, but they do seem to be romping away where they want, no matter how much I want them to go round in circles.

Our butternuts seem to be doing what that site said, and the first leaves are still there so we can check, but they're hardly 'romping' anywhere, it's still much too cold.

Maybe it only works with some varieties?
