  • What next after Earlies

    Hi Folks

My first Earlies are almost ready for harvesting and was wondering if there is anything i can put in the bed after rather than leaving empty

Most of the rotations i have read say to put in a green manure ready for Peas and beans next year but it seem a shame to leave the bed empty

    Any ideas welcome

    Cheers

Leeks, winter cabbage, kale, quick growing salad crops - the choice is endless.

certainly leeks are traditionally grown up here in the bed used for new potatoes once that crop is cleared, as is spring cabbage but as Rustylady says, there is a wide choice. A sowing of early carrots or beetroot would still do well at this time also.

I've got cabbages, sprouts, broccolli and cauliflower all waiting in the wings to go in somewhere!

I have a dozen or so xmas F1 spouts ready for planting as each row of first earies come out. The second earlies will be replaced with 4 dozen various winter cabbages, all growing nicely in my greenhouse. This bottom bed was left fallow all last winter and covered in paper, hos muck and hops. This winter the top bed, currently with onions and cabbages, will be left fallow and ready for pots next year.
