  • Pumpkins for Fall

This is my first post here about my family's first garden...I'm in the process of what I consider to be a great first effort of growing a garden, and so far, so good. But, I was wondering what the best time to plant pumpkins and greens is for me. I live in West Tennessee, and it's been pretty dang hot for awhile. I don't want to put them in the ground and the wrong time and waste a bunch of effort. Can anyone help me?

Hi CTate, and welcome to the vine! It's nice to have another international Grape join us.
Now, Ill be the first to admit I'm not the best informed when it comes to growing conditions in West Tennessee. but I would guess that when buying seeds there would be suitable information as to sowing and planting on the back of the packet. Also, if you're looking at plants then there will be loads about in the shops etc when it is time to plant, I would say that you'd be ok to get anything "squash-like" in the ground now. As long as you don't get frosts at night - in which case use some sort of protection over them at night - and keep them very well watered (best done in the evening) your pumpkins should thrive. They don't mind it hot - just be prepared for them to cover a lot of ground - they are VERY large plants!
    Good luck

Hello C.Tate and a very warm welcome to the vine from Jinny Cat & Me as well. Here's a link to the satellite station in your area. If you pop in where abouts you live...it'll show you what weather your going to get. I have one for the European weather, there very useful and very rarely get it wrong. Good luck with the growing and I hope to chat with you some other time.

...and same as above. Welcome from me too. I must say though, last summer for us here in S.Wales was pretty hot - my pumpkins did grow fast, and large. I'd have thought from the middle of June would have been fine. Are they plants, or will you be sowing seed?

We need to start them off early over here, as our growing season isn't very long - so they need all the time they can get to grow, mature and then finally cure.
