One of life's little mysteries if you ask me - but I dare-say someone will be able to give you a real reason for it. But as you say, if the plants are healthy and you are getting a decent crop it's not really a problem, is it? I have known potato flowers to set with fruit which looks extremely like tomatoes. If these occur on yours DON'T be tempted to eat them as they are -along with potato leaves - EXTREMELY poisonous if eaten

I would think its because they have not been pollinated. The fruit that comes afterwards is full of seed and if you know what your doing (Idon't) you can grow new plants from these.

The user you want to look for is Duronal - he started an experiement thread - really useful.

I've got some rooster x charlotte seeds, was too late this year, but hoping to next year.

I may try to get a rooster x blue cross to see how that fares.
