I kept one parsnip back from the winter harvest and replanted it to allow it to flower as an attractant for beneficial insects. It's now occurred to me that i can save the seed but I'm not sure exactly how to go about it. I think the seed needs to dry on the plant - but for how long? I'm sure there's a fine line between too early and it self-seeding all over my broad bean bed!

Vegetable Seeds : Parsnip Seed suggests they go papery. I've a row of them waiting to collect the seed - at the moment they look like parnsip seeds, but they're still fat and green.. I was planning on waiting until they dried out some (I'd have thought another 2/3 weeks) before I harvest them.

Let them dry on the plant as much as you can - the plant is really tall, you may need to stake it
If you get prolonged wet weather near harvest time, cut the stalks and let the browning seed continue drying in a ... dry placeAll gardeners know better than other gardeners." -- Chinese Proverb.
