  • Transplanting big brassicas

I planted lots of brassica seedlings under my new brassica cage (made from an old broken gazebo and some debris netting) thinking some would fall by the wayside. However they are all romping away- about foot and a half high - and are far to close. I could just hack some down to thin it out but it seems like a waste. Is it possible to transplant them then they get this big? I've got calabrese, caulis, PSB, romanesque and brussels under there.

Probably worth a try. I hate to throw away plants, so I'd do it if you have space. Try and keep as much of the root ball as possible and water them heavily to start with as the large leaves will lose a lot of water and the plants may wilt.

      It's certainly worth a try.

My PSB are in Morrisons buckets at this time, about 18" above compost level. They will have to hold in there for at least 2 more weeks until a large container becomes free, only then will they be potted on.
I also have my last 3 caulis in 6" pots waiting for the Morrisons buckets occupied by the PSB.

I know its not the same as digging them up but I do this every year and have no trouble, so as above if you take plenty of root ball and water them in well I think you have a good chance of success.
