Transplanting Lettuce Seedlings

I usually transplant my lettuce seedlings from the seed tray to individual modules. But, I'm thinking of skipping this stage and just transplanting them straight into the bed.

I have created a very fine tilth and can keep the area moist.

Is this likely to succeed or fail?

They are two types of iceberg lettuce.

Mine (oak leaf) worked just fine like that. They're in the middle of the sweetcorn... it's nowhere near shading them out.

It depends if the slugs get them you could try using a few organic pellets.

The sluggy things didn't get my direct-sown lettuce/salad.......I'm gonna give it a go and be damned!

It doesn't work for me cos of the slugs and I'm not at the lottie every day to water which they seem to need if they're started in trays. I prefer mine to get a reasonable size for those reasons but if you can avoid that then you'll be fine.
