  • Comfrey tea legislation

I have just read the latest edition of the Connexions newspaper (July). I hadn't realised that to use comfrey or nettle tea in the garden could land me in prison! Apparently a law was passed in 2006 banning their use. The use of nettle tea (prepared in a special way) is now legal, but none of the other treatments are.
So what will I do? Carry on using them and risk a large fine and being put in prison because what's the harm in using them!

Rodley, do you have any further information on this legislation? I can't find any reference to it.

Rustylady, Rodley is based in France so no doubt this legislation is only applicable there.

This legislation was passed to prevent you from making your own pesticides- just in case you overdid it/drank it whatever. Nettle and comfrey teas are foliar feeds and as far as I know are not covered. Mods should perhaps note that is is illegal to post recipes for making your own pesticides - rhubarb!

That would include the old one with cigarette ends too.

You know what the pub landlord say "without rules where would we be -FRANCE" I shouldn't think the french take much notice of rules like this it only the english jobsworths that would be hiding in the bushes waiting to persecute someone

I don't see how "they " can ban pouring water onto comfrey or nettles, without also banning pouring water onto camellia (sinensis)

I was going to say much of what I do in my garden is illegal but that could be misinterpreted

I do use all manner of home-made feeds/pesticides and find that the best approach with bureaucrats is to ignore them.

Indeed, it'd not stop me making/using it. I can't even see how they'd police it unless you're doing it on an industrial scale.

Comfrey? No it's borage (just big as I've fed it alot )

                              Nettles? Nope, it's horehound
