  • Red Cabbage not forming

Whilst my red cabbages look very healthy, the leaves are big, but do not seem to be forming into the normal cabbage ball.

Can I use the large leaves in any way.

Can I encourage a ball by gathering them and tying them together or what please?

    Regards

As far as I know, when cabbages don't heart up its usually because the soil wasn't firm enough, it needs to be really compacted. I'm no expert though so maybe someone else will verify.

The leaves will be fine to eat though.

Would not expect much of a heart on red cabbage yet as it is still early for them. I don't usually harvest red cabbage till end Sept into October. Brassicas do tend to like firm soil but I have never found cabbage to be a problem, sprouts on the other hand.

Yeah, I thought it was a bit early to be expecting red cabbage ~ what variety are you growing?

I've got red cabbage growing healthily, but it's not hearting up yet and I don't expect it to quite yet. Patience my friend.
