  • My first real post and it's declaring a total disaster

I have had a total disaster today we had a small wall that was back filled with soil the wall was a little unsteady so I decided to dig out the back fill. Big mistake as I was digging I hit what I thought was a brick so I found the end and dug under to lift it however it was actually a brick coming of the wall and as I levered the brick up the wall decided to fall over smack bang into my carrots and Parsnips the bricks where removed and suddenly the back fill decided to get in on the act and fell covering the Parsnips Grrrrrrrrrrrrr. I can safely assume the Parsnips have had it The carrot stems where bent right over what chance if any do they have of surviving??? First time gardener so what can I expect? A large skip for the wall and excess soil is a Cert

Mr Jolly NOT SO JOLLY tonight!

Thank you I will try that as for the Parsnips If I try removing the soil about 12 inches or more of it chances are they won't make it I fear will get the hose pipe on the carrots tomorrow and hope that any that survived are not attacked by Carrot fly now they have been disturbed.

When did you sow the parsnips?

If they were early, they might be quite big by now, so rather than risk it, I'd hoik them out now and eat as baby parsnips. I thinned mine not long ago and ate the thinnings, they were blooming lovely!

You have our sympathy, hopefully you can salvage something.

A bit of lateral thinking here...
Try sowing the bricks and see if you can regrow the wall?

Don't throw away the makings of a perfectly good raised bed!

Some very off the wall thinking here....I suppose you could say you are not coping, but consider this a foundation course on careful gardening. (But rest assured, at least your wall will not fall down again.)
I would certainly skip disposing of the materiels unless you have nowhere to put a raised bed...don't forget though, that the subsoil will not work as a growing medium, you do need topsoil on the top.

at least it was only the plants that copped it not you!

That's already in hand what I'm getting rid of is all the rubble and soil I can't use. Skip arriving today.
