  • My maincrop tatties are flowering!

It's crazy. My first earlies (Charlotte, kestrel) are late in maturing. In fact it's only in the last week or so I've been harvesting, and now my maincrop desire are flowering and looking like being ready very soon.

This years growing climate has been hugely strange

Still might just lift the lot and try some taters for Christmas. Never done that before. Anyone got any suggestions? I'm west of Scotland so need to be fairly hardy for frost etc but judging by the messed up climate who knows! I may be best going for sweet potatoes!

Our maincrop is flowering...also wanted some Christmas potatoes but might have left it too late.

I've just come back from the lottie and I was amazed to see some of the sweetcorn looks full-sized and the silks are starting to turn brown. I've taken some photos and will upload at some point. Wish I'd planted more now as it looks like the crop will be over very early!

Not if you have an ad-blocker! I reckon Tattieman would be the one.

My spuds are beginning to flower too - I only put them in at Easter, but the warm wet weather has meant they've grown like weeds. I just hope there's a good crop of taters underneath there!

Have tried one root of my main crop (harlequin) potatoes and the yield is brilliant. Will leave them for a while yet as the tops are still a lush green colour. The Sarpo ones are looking good as well though the leaves are starting to go yellow on them. The Winston were a total disaster with a nil harvest.

My main crop Picasso have had the occasional flower on over the last month or so. With main crop I ignore them and wait for the haulm to die back, only then will I consider disturbing them.

Thats what I was just about to ask. I'll be lifting my earlies soon and thought about planting some in buckets and moving them into the GH for xmas.

Oh absolutely. No danger I'm going to touch them until they've well died back, it's just going to be a fair bit sooner than hoped. Ach, I suppose they'll store well enough.
