We did try some spuds in containers, but they haven't done very well. We're wondering if it was either a bad batch of compost or that they were in the wrong place - too shady and cold.
Our blackcurrants (and herbs) are amongst perennial flowers rather than close to other shrubs. They get a good autumn feed and get mulched etc along with everything else, and seem to do okay. We got about five pounds of fruit off the currant we forgot to prune last year, so the berries were a bit smaller than they should have been.
I'm not sure how well they'd compete with big, well-established, shrubs though.
Don't forget that you could grow cordons or espaliers on walls or fences at the back of your veg or flower beds, or even 'stepover' apples etc at the front.
