  • Tomato feed help

Hi think i have made a total error. When i planted my tomato plants in their final position
i found some miracal grow slow release tabs and for some unknown reason i pushed 2 tabs into each bucket thinking i will take them out when first flowers show.
The problem is i forgot and now they have broken up deep in the buckets
Will this cause any problems with the plants have noticed some flowers dropping but not all.
live up north so weather been terrible not sure if this has caused some to drop.

I don't think the tablets will have any adverse effect on the plants. Are the plants in a greenhouse or outside?

Hi plants are in a greenhouse the feed is NPK fertiliser 10-11-18.
is this to much nitrogen also should i keep up with the correct amount of tomorite feed.
      Thanks

They will have no bad effect on your plants and judging from the NPK formula its is high in potash and low in nitrogen, which is great after the first truss as set. Personally I would give them a nitrogen feed until the flowers start to set then revert to tomorite if needed.

How long is the slow release food supposed to last for? Personally, I wouldn't feed them anything extra until that has been used up - over-feeding can cause as many problems as under-feeding...

Depends on the pellet and its formulation I have not used the Miracle Grow ones but the Tomorite recommended application is far more than two pellets per pot. Thats why I think they may be a little light on nitrogen at this stage in their growth. The other thing to bear in mind when growing in pots is that as you water you wash a lot of goodness out of the pot which needs to be replaced.

... or put a saucer / gravel tray under the pot? Saves you water & time too

The chap next door put large saucers under his toms, unfortunately they were outside so when it rained they sat in the water for quite a long time. Result 3 out of 5 dead. Might go with the gravel tray if I had room which I am afraid I don't.

This happened to me this year I think partly because the drainage holes weren't adequate, but also because I put used, dried out teabags in the bottom of the pots which held on to the water. Result? Rotted roots on about 5 of the plants. I have salvaged some, but I'm not sure I'll get many tomatoes. Hope you get lots!
