  • Tomato comparison Wilma Vs Maskotka

We tried a couple of new bush tomato varieties this year (well new to us) following a good but rather bland crop of "Gardern Pearl" last year

We chose Wilma and Maskotka both according to the blurb on the seed packet high on their flavour.

    Anyway... my views:

Wilma - lovely small compact plant, ideal for small pots on the patio. At this stage of the year probably 12 inches high and spread approx 8 inches. It really is compact and does not sprawl at all. Tasty small cherry sized fruit.
    Pics of Wilma below.

Maskotka - A very "rangy" plant. It spreads moe than it grows in height!. Far more so than Wilma. More suited for larger pots. It does tend to trail a lot more too. (Though it might be to big to be seen as a proper hanging basket type plant). That said, it seems to be a very heavy cropper. Fruit seems larger than Wilma, somewhere between cherry and salad sized.
    Pics of Maskotka below.

As an aside, both were sown at a similar time in March. Wilma suffered a lot more from the early spring chills compared to Maskotka.

...and the wife prefers the taste of Maskotka

Never grown Wilma but grow Maskotka every year in hanging baskets. Does best in the tunnel and is always my first to crop and still going at the end of the season. Mine are definitely cherry sized which is what I want from it.

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

This is very informative, thanks for sharing! I am planning to grow mostly bush varieties next year as cordons just need so much more maintenance, especially for a container grower like myself.

I've planted Maskota for the first time this year, in hanging baskets. They are only just showing first signs of fruiting, but they do seem a bit dense (as in short, bushy and compact) - not what I expected from a variety billed as a tumbler.
For all that they do look to be quite healthy, so we'll see....
