  • What can I plant now?

Have had a dreadful year. Slugs ate my potatoes and tomatoes then peas and beans failed. Desperately playing catch up. I'm re-sewing my beans and peas but I was wondering what else can I sew now? Any suggestions welcomed.

Hi RM, we'll need to know where you are and whether you plant in the ground or in containers. You'll get plenty of suggestions when we know! Sorry to hear you're having a bad year. I can sympathise, I drowned most of my tomatoes - accidentally of course!

Maybe stick your location in your profile. Will stop future enquiries . I know I haven't but my user name kinda gives my location away.

Still plenty of things that can be sown now. Any chinese leaf stuff (pak choi etc), turnips (for leaves or small roots), beetroot (again leaves or baby roots), carrots, beans should sneak in for a late harvest, peas, radishes - summer and winter, kohl rabi, lettuce, rocket, spring onions, spring cabbages. I think you'd get away with starting kale and purple sprouting broccoli now too. If you can find any plants of brassicas (garden centres etc) that'd be even better.

Thanks for the info. Looks like I'll be eating a healthy diet of greens. Do they go well with chocolate?

Yes, broccoli in chocolate sauce is delish. Choccoli I think it's called - or was is brocolate?

lol, what did you expect to grow, chicken nuggets? Anyway, greens are nice, and even nicer with cheese sauce on

It does, but I never look at the user name for location, I look under the location on the other side of the screen.

Tried to go liquorish without much success. Might try marshmallow next year. Have a healthy crop of berries. Must search out some interesting recipes for greens. Years of dark green Irish cabbage boiled in the ham water had put me off greens for life but I guess it's worth trying again.

Muttley, don't knock greens. Until you've tried your own home-grown stuff you'll never know what they are supposed to taste like.
