Ash to compost

I have recently bought a dustbin burner and wondered wether i can deposit the ash onto my compost heap. I will only be burning hedge and tree clippings.

Instead of (or as well as) adding to your compost heap you can spread the ash (thinly) round fruit trees and bushes.

I have been told that wood ash loses its nutrients rapidly in which case while it will be ok on the compost heap you would be better off spreading it directly on the soil.
