Spring Onions - white mould problem

My Spring onion crop is just coming to peak size, but to my great dissapointment, they seem to be badly affected by some kind of white mould.

Any ideas why this has happened, and can they be saved ?

Note: the first ones planted were bought as young plants from a garden centre, and the rest were grown from seed, and are still very small.

Onion white rot? Is it at the roots and do the leaves just turn pale overnight and the onion loses any grip it has on the soil?

Hi Zazen999. Yes thats about the size of it. Top growth on many is weaker and paler.
Most of bulb ok'ish.
It will be interesting to see if the self-sown seeds are affected.

NOT a nice fungal problem to have in your soil, if it is, as it is persistant and can take many years to get rid of!

Only affects alliums though so other crops can still be grown!

I got white rot a few years ago, and it still got the onions even when I rotated ~ I believe it was in the sets I bought (Wilko)

This year I used a new patch of ground, bought from somewhere else ~ and no white rot at all, fingers crossed. I'll now keep my alliums in this new patch permanently, and incorporate lots of compost every year so as not to deplete the soil
