Eh, What's Up, Doc ?

At the allotment today I noticed that some little varmint has been snipping the leaves off my carrots, which are at the stage of just developing their first leaves, or are only on about four fronds.
They are bitten off exactly at ground level, not all of them were eaten however - some were just lying there.
Not a problem I've had before. They've been netted, and I had down lots of diatomaceous earth pellets to keep the slugs away - it seems to work fine enough everywhere else.
Any ideas ?

Hmm, I did wonder. But they've left my peas alone, and they are just a couple of yards away !

last year we had a fox that must have climbed onto the raised bed of carrots and uprooted one corner. We get alot and they are usually digging for grubs. We get them digging holes in the bowling green down the club also looking for grubs.

Do you have squirrels? They eat an amazing selection of stuff. One picked my neighbour's green strawbs a couple of years ago and piled them up in the middle of the bed. He only knew because he saw him do it!

I was digging there the other day and two teenage lads walked past me. It doesn't sound unusual but my patch is an old abandoned garden at the back of three shops, with a gap beside the shops but no way out at the far end. (Well, so far it sounds like typical teenager [ie mutant] thinking doesn't it...?) I don't know who was more nonplussed to see someone, them or me, but they calmly marched across two plots, (sticking to the paths), then disappeared over the garden wall.
So far the local glue sniffers/drinkers have been very well behaved, just a wee bit of litter in over the wall, but I don't see them taking up the netting at dead of night to go on a quiet wee carotene kick !
Whatever it was, didn't disturb the netting. Just how clever are these squirrels, anyway....
