Thing is, the point is not that using nonorganic (or whatever) stuff works. Of course it works. Its whether the individual feels it's ok to use it or not. And that's very much up to personal taste/ beliefs!

At one time all the 'midden' waste, including some of the ash from coal fires was spread on the land by farmers so everyone eating farm grown produce was eating food grown with the help of human waste
I was led to believe, and still think, that it is ok to compost animal waste from herbivores but not carnivores? Toxicana canis and felis are the main worries with cat and dog poo I would think?

My personal opinion is that because we've certainly had no water shortage in the NE this year (rained most of the year!) and my plants have had all the nutrients they required, trickle fed, they have been healthier and not succumbed to pests and diseases that are more likely to attack a sickly plant or soil? Because they have had slow release fertiliser they haven't had a growth flush which even organic fertilisers can sometimes give.
Stuff tastes just the sam though. When nutrients are absorbed by the plant it doesn't worry where it gets those nutrients from, as long as it gets them.
Because of the organic content in the soil the worms are very active and because of my pond full of frogs I haven't seen any slugs or suffered slug damage this year either.

Getting back to dogs we now stock a dog poo wormery! It is basically a wheelie bin. You add worms and some kind of powder. I will see if I can find a link and info today. You can't use the compost on food or areas where kiddies play, so flaming useless imo! Oh I do hope my boss doesn't read this

It used to be perfectly common here too. Humanure was shifted around the country on barges to fertilise the fields.
I've used composting toilets before. They're a little strange at first (you sit on a loo seat over a deep hole - a "long drop" - in the open air but with a little fence around you so only your head is visible. After you're done, you drop a handful of sawdust down the hole instead of gallons of drinking-quality water. Tis good, doesn't smell at all)

More info here on humanure if anyone's interested

The gardener's composting toilets are still in existence (but not in use) at the Lost Gardens of Heligan
