I think if I was being restricted to one family it would be a toss-up between brassicas and solanaceae. Brassicas cover most nutrients, you also get roots for starch like swedes, turnips and kohl rabi. But. I'd hate to be without tomatoes. Or potatatoes. Although the blight thing would be a problem for sure. But then there's cabbage whites, club-root, root-fly... Hmmmm...
*plumps for the potatoes and prays for a dry summer.... If 'it' gets too bad, I can always eat the foliage *Last edited by SarzWix; 22-07-2011, 10:15 AM.

Ach, see, I'm looking at that now and thinking 'Well, if I had a freezer, I could live on the rosacae family quite happily' and the carrot group would be great for a soup diet... In fact, there's only the 'Beet' family that I'd not be able to 'mek a do' with - not keen on beets or spinach.

Ohhh that a bit tricky,I love spuds/toms & cannot imagine life without them, but for their big leaves, big bright flowers & the variations in size, shape & colour of the fruit it has to be the cuc's that top the fun to grow leagueHe who smiles in the face of adversity, has already decided who to blame

Much as I love growing and eating beans they give Mr Flum absolute gyp so I end up eating them all myself.
I've voted solanaceae because I love my spuds and tomatoes. This is in spite of the fact that T'ai Chi recommends you don't eat solaneaceae because of the toxins.

I voted for cabbage as with careful planning i can eat my own fresh cabbages for about 40 weeks a year.. but my fav is beans as they freeze well for winter use.
