  • Sungold - bit dissapointed!

After reading all the hype on websites/here about them, I gave them a go this year.

Sure, they're sweet without hardly any acid but I expected so much more!

I've been looking for one with a bit of acid bite.....they're all being bred to be too sweet IMO, so they lose their tomato flavour. In fact I think makes them quite flavourless!

My fav to date is Black Cherry, but you have to pick them before they look fully ripe, as the colour deceives

That's quite a point you have there Thelma. I don't like them too sweet and certainly never straight from the fridge, or they don't taste like tomatoes.

I never keep tomatoes in the fridge. Ruins the taste. Best tasting tomato you will ever is straight off the plant, eaten there and then.

Make sure they are fuly ripe. But you have to catch them before the skins burst!

Don't overwater them Chris, or you'll lose the flavour

I've got them setup on an auto watering malarky thingymajig.. only waters once a day - seems to be just about right. They're growing on me now, just munched another handful. I think it's down to me prefering a more acid tasting tom. Some "pome" something tomatoes from waitrose are pretty much my favourite at the mo. May save the seeds and see if I can grow them next year!

Definitely save the seeds of any tom that you like ... they usually come true (well mine did)

I've also read rave reviews about Sungold, and am also not really impressed. Sweet is ok, but the plant is on a take-over bid of the greenhouse, and not really producing that many tomatoes. So don't think it will make next years grow list

I had some lovely sungolds from two plants last year, so planed double this year, but the crop has been very disappointing, we had a little flourish about a month ago, acouple here and there and at the moment there's maybe a handful of green ones. I was hoping with double the plants for double the amount, but its about half or less. I have two shirley plants which are really prolific.
The Amish paste ones are also disppointing - we've had about 6 toms from two plants and there's 3 more ripening....

hmm, I think I may have to retract my earlier post. Just tasted some ones delivered from Abel & Cole, and the sungolds. Though this time, from the fridge. I much, much preferred it chilled, it did taste better in my opinion. The one from Abel and Cole was nice, acidic... then I tasted the sungold.. the A&C one was just like water after eating another. Quite surprised, normally their stuff is top notch.

I'll be saving the ones from my red cherry - the truss(es?) on them are 20" long and still growing!

I stopped mine quite early on (as soon as the 4th truss was identifiable). I did that though, as I've a lot of tomatoes in my greenhouse - walking in there is bad enough now - can't imagine what it'd be like if they were at the roof height!

Shall add that to next years list to give it a go!
