Ovewintering Onions - Recommended Varieties

All the autumn sow onion varieties have been bred to do just that. Any failure is likely to be down to not having the right growing conditions. There is very little in the veg world that will survive cold wet growing conditions. So if you have a heavy soil then chances of getting onions to survive the winter are minimal. If your soil is not free draining then it can help if you form ridges and plant the sets on the ridges to aid drainage. Cold winds can also be a problem and some sort of wind break can make a difference.

I had great sucess last year in growing my Senshyu in a cold frame with the covers left on all winter. Once the spring arrived, covers came off and they were streets ahead of the sets I had planted outdoors and were the first to mature!
Once the soil was vacated I sowed Swedes straight away in the same cold frame and they are doing quite well also at this moment in time.My Majesty made for him a garden anew in order
to present to him vegetables and all beautiful flowers.- Offerings of Thutmose III to Amon-Ra (1500 BCE)
