  • Woody Sprouts

I've finally cleared the potato bed, but the red sprouts I had "waiting in the wings" in root trainers look a bit on the woody side. Should I risk it, or compost them and plant something else? I do have some more bras at the seedling stage, should I wait a bit and plant them when they're ready? Caulie AYR, Wheelers Imperial cabbage and some Curly Kale.

nowt to lose by planting em out, FF.. i put some very leggy winter cabbages in 3 weeks ago, but after lots of early morning watering, then the recent rain, they are starting to look more like.

Why don't you give them a bit more than the usual spacing and interplant with something else in case they don't do well. Hedge your bets

Put them in Flo if you have the space. Bury them to the level of the lowest leaves.

I'm going to give them a chance it seems such a waste not to. Thanks RL.

It is very late to be planted sprouts out from root trainers so I wouldn't hold your breath on getting anything much from them but give them a try if you want to. I find that if you want sprouts for Christmas then you need to have planted them out Mayish. Mine are now quite big plants with teeney little sprouts the size of half my little finger nail starting to form.

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

                Oops.
I'm pretty sure though that I've never been that organised and they go out much later than that.(July maybe) Can't remember for certain though. My sprouts haven't been out that long at all this year - even more disorganised than usual and they're already starting to show signs of sprout formation. Tis getting a bit late but if you give them lots of muck or compost you might get lucky.

My other green sprouts went out in May and they're huge plants now. I'm going to put a couple of the woody ones in and watch them over the next couple of days to see if they establish, if they don't they're destined for the compost and I'll try again next year.
