Florence I tried everything at the time, new seed, different varieties, different compost, more water, less water, sowing 10 seeds a fortnight in succession you name it I tried it. Some did not germinate others got to 2/3 true leaves and shrivelled.
SWMBO loves cauli and asked me to have one last try at the beginning of the third season and bingo lovely caulis.
I don't mind but I would love to know WHY? and yes I am shouting.

Similar story with my cauli's. I've never had much luck with them really, I get the odd smallish head, but nothing like I know they can be . Funny, because cabbages and sprouts always do well, so I doubt it's the soil (which I have to lime).
It's my biggest frustration because I really love them, as go my kids, and I'd love to be able to table something decent. Ah well, I'll just keep trying in the hope that perserverance of thd rest of you pays off!Clay soil is just the big yins way of letting you know nothing good comes easy.

In a weird way I find this thread quite encouraging. A lot of my crops (specially Brassicas) have been absolutely rubbish this year, everything except potatoes and onions have either failed to germinate, got munched as soon as they poked their heads through or bolted) and I've been toying with the idea of giving up except that I've put so much time, effort and money into it I don't want to make a hasty decision.
So while I can sympathise totally with everyone, I'm also so glad to find it's not just me.
