  • How do you know you have a glut?

Is it when the family groan - "do we have to have beans AGAIN!" or is it when the freezer is full? Perhaps it's when friends and neighbours hurry in the opposite direction when they see you with a suspiciously bean shaped bag? Maybe when even the compost bin is fed up with the tough ones you missed picking?
No, I think it's when you start accosting complete strangers in the street with a manic look in your eye, "Do you like runner beans? Would you like some, please, please take some! Please, don't go away, I need to give you some beans. Please..............."
I even thought about leaving some on each of the doorsteps I pass on the way back from the lottie!

When you run out of freezer bags, bowls to put tomatoes in, worktop space - everything is covered. When the potato sacks are storing in your built in wardrobe alongside your marrows and onions. Your entire top shelf in your American style fridge freezer is stacked with jam, whilst shelf two is loaded with chutney nestling amongst the cheese.
Yes we've passed to family and neighbours. Now donations to the village show..?

By the way I'm sick of turnips now and fed up with boiling beets and pickling. Enough with the eau de vinegar, pink fingers too!

A glut for us is when we have more than the family (of 2) can eat and/or process and we have to give to neighbours etc.

A tragedy is when no-one wants them and they have to be binned!

when all the family have had courgettes, and you've cooked them in everyway known to womankind, there is a shelful in the fridge, and you still have more growing

Still I'd be moaning if there were none

Twice. Once with overgrown and unusable runners after a holiday (this year) and ditto with an overgrown courgette that no-one wanted and I just couldn't face eating (that was last year)

                          Otherwise I'm very good... promise!
