Over wintering project

Hi,

I have ordered some autumn planting onions (troy, radar, senshyu), shallots (griselle), and some elephant garlic, and though I have my eye on attempting to over winter some cabbage, Kale (maybe?), and some swede (if I can get the seeds to germinate, will be sowing them this week).

My question is can anyone suggest if theres any other veg that I have missed off my list that is well worth over wintering?

This is my first attempt at overwintering I must add, as I have only had my 1/2 plot 9 months so would be nice to get some suggestions.

Cabbage and cauliflower as well as kale, and garlic, lots of garlic here.

I think it's too late for sowing swede, they should have been sown a couple of months ago, as should the winter cabbage. You have to think about winter crops in the summer (it's just not fair is it )
My red russian kale says it can be sown in August, and you may not be too late to sow some spring cabbage for greens.

Broad beans Aquadulce Claudia! Certain 'round seeded' peas will overwinter also but I've never had much luck with these!

The cauliflower seeds I sowed about 6 weeks ago made fine juicy little plants which when planted out were eaten by the snails. I have since bought cabbage and cauliflower plants from Mr Fothergill, half price.

There's always salad leaves - lambs lettuce and winter desity spring to mind immediately - sow now for crops over the winter months. Winter radish such as Black Spanish Round are also worth a go.

I'll be sowing my 'all the year round' and Arctic king lettuce this week, some will go in the greenhouse once the toms have finshed then the rest get planted in the bed ouside.

Chard works brilliantly overwintered. And spinach - both sorts.

I'm still gonna persist with sowing the swede - so we'll see if late sowing here pays dividends or not. may try olivia kholrabi too.

^ you can only try (a few), but don't be put off if they don't work: save most of the seed for the correct sowing time ~ your packet will tell you

Perpetual spinach is a good one. Grows really quickly, last for ages and ages, and is a cut and come and again plant.

Winter growing - for me, it's the usual Christmas potatoes. Never had a spud from them, but I give them a go each year. A trier... and I always think I'm going to succeed this time.
