White skinned onions?

We recently saw somebody selling some organic white skinned onions, they looked absolutely amazing but were far too expensive to buy to try.

Has anybody grown them?

If so, what variety, what do they taste like when compared to the more usual red or yellow skinned ones, and where could we get sets from at a reasonable price?

Oh, and should the sets be planted autumn or spring?

I planted sets of snowball this spring,they did not grow well ,but all my onions were small this year,but the flavour was good and they seem to be storing ok

Don't know the variety, probably Snowball, but they usually have sets of white skinned alongside red and yellow in Wilkinsons.

not the ones i know as spanish onions? very large, white skins, mild flavour?

I grew Snowball this year, they didn't do as well as Radar and Red Baron

I grew some lovely white skinned onions this year, but wasn't at all sure where they'd come from...




Until I remembered I'd planted out loads of spring onions at the same time as the ordinary sets! D'oh!

I grew snowball last year, they were not as big as the red ones - probably about the size of a desert apple, but they are lovely and sweet. I am going to grow them in spring

I agree. I grew Snowball this year, the onions are a lot smaller than Sturon but firm, attractive and look like good keepers. But as I live on my own, I don't really want monster onions - or tomatoes or spuds or beans, peas etc.
I will save a small fortune on not buying fertiliser and just using the bedding from my chicken & duck houses. Truth to tell, these days I get more pleasure from the growing than the eating - due to lots of teeth missing and my stomachbeing severely reduced.

Hello Alan, welcome to the Vine. I know what you mean about getting pleasure from the growing, I grow most of my produce, particularly chillies and garlic for my daughter and her family. Whereabouts in the country are you?

I've just planted some overwintering "Snowball" as The Range were doing 3 packs for £5 and 2 packs of garlic were enough! I haven't grown them successfully before - last time they were spring planted so hoping the autumn sets will turn out better.

Neither had I but the pack had its little trowel picture over Oct, Nov & December......lets hope it was meant for the UK market

my white onions from wilco were a bit of a disaster, but the ones that didnt succumb to some sort of slimy collapsing thing were wonderfully firm and sweet. the baby silverskins from marshalls which I grew from seed were wonderful though!
