Onion sets

I'm stocking up today as I'm delivering supplies to a couple of schools next week - and the price for onion sets quoted over the phone was £3.99 for 25.



They are having laff - surely?

May as well buy the full grown onions for that price.

No - this wasn't even organic sets [they can't supply until after I visit so can't use them].

This is a Blue Diamond centre in Derby.

Just called back to check and apparently they range from £1.99 for 10 [double ] to £3.99 for 50 [not 25].

If I can't find some at a decent price, it's seeds all the way. They both have polytunnels so seeds should do it.

Shame, but I was planning on buying 500 and at that price; they can 'jog on' as they say.

HOW MUCH? we dont pay owt like that from our allotment society hut. If memory serves me right we all paid about two quid a kilo. if i get down on sunday when the hut is open i will try and remember to get the phone number of the guy we use. I got 25kilo of onions from a kilo of sets. Here are some i have strung up.

I got some from a garden centre today. The make was Taylors, I got Senshyu and Electric for £1.49 a pack of 50, and some shallots which started with the letter J for £2.49 for 10. Not bought or planted these before but the sets were clean, solid and healthy.

Time will tell.

that's a lovely string of onions - I tried to plait my garlic but I obviously don't have the knack!

that's what I ended up getting for these 2 schools.....but some did have manky sets in them so found 3 without mouldy ones that I could see.

I suspect the person on the phone had no idea what they were actually talking about.

There are 2 strings of onions in the picture.... i did 4 (2 for me and 2 for my pal).
I dont plait them, Piggle, but tie a large onion to the string and then tie 2 onions together and twist them on the siring and carry on until the string is full enough.. About 8 and 1/2 lbs per string.

Zaz, it might well be worth talking to Marshall's if you haven't tried them already. They do reduced prices for groups like allotment societies. Can't see why they wouldn't do it for a bunch of schools too. Might be too late now, but could be useful later?

Trying to avoid Wilkos for sets after my own white rot problem.

I'd usually wait for our own shop to get the organic ones in - as I'm only going once to these schools this term so needed them pronto.

Still - purchased now. but honestly - the girl answering the phone this morning lost a good sale. Tsk.
