    Thats about the same size as my mature bulbs!

    Had thought about planting some of the skinnier ones I grew from seed to see what happens?

    I reckon about 8 inches apart and stuck 1 inch into the soil or enough to allow them to stand up? Once they have rooted you can always pull a bit of the soil back.

      My handy little book recognises round & long varieties with common planting instructions;
      Push the sets into holes in the soil,so that the tips are just above the surface.Plant at 6" intervals with rows 10" apart.Space 8" apart if growing in blocks
      Edit:
      Although Medwyn Williams agrees with Snadge & puts in half depth ...... http://www.nvsuk.org.uk/medwyn-willi...w-show-70.html

          Thank you. They do look about the size for eating Snadger! They are going in the ground this week and it will be interesting to see what happens.

            Doesn't really matter how deep they are planted so long as the root plate is in contact with the soil although a bit of cover will help keep the set upright as it grows.

              Someone I know on another forum has asked the question of wilkos about the variety - but they also all believe that these are Jermor or the like rather than true banana shallots. If I find out, I'll let you know.

                  Yesterday I was in Wilko & they had restocked,so I duly got a pkt of 10 for £2 got home & counted,there were actually 9 heyho
                  Today Marshall's catalogue arrived looking at the pictures on page 12/13 from the shape & colour I would also guess we have got Jermor

                  text on that page,
                  The shallots do not increase in size but quickly start to grow and form a cluster of bulbs to harvest next summer

                    I got the same thing (what they called 'banana shallots') from another garden centre earlier this year. Planted them approx 6" apart and I got loads of banana type shallots...They tast nice and look ok, so I'm not too bothered if they arent authentic ones....!!

                            Can I plant these shallots in the gaps between my caulies and cabbage? What do you think? Please.

                                Hi BB, I've put the cabbage and cauli in my empty spud bed. Think I've identified another bed now for the shallots. My have I been hard at it today!
