Oh and to your question, I'd sow direct if you're doing it as a green manure (they are a proper green manure and will be just as good as the ones marketed as such) as you'll be sowing thickly but in modules for eating so I get the best spacings. Don't suffer with mice though (or use slug pellets)

Dunno about the chitting first. This year mice removed quite a few young bb plants. I assume it was mice as I don't think pigeons dig little holes ...

Got something of a crop by putting pots with the bottoms cut out (previously used with tomatoes in grow bags to earth up around stems) and bottle cloches over the remaining seedlings and replanting some beans with simliar protection.

Alternatively why not try this simple dish. It is lovely to eat broad beans raw, with a little salt and olive oil along with salami, prosciutto and some feta. Lovely served with warm bread, straight from the oven.
I thought you maintained we shouldn't eat raw beans?

400g broad beans (podded weight), simmered until tender & skinned if necessary

                  1 fat garlic clove, crushed

                  3 tbsp Extra-virgin olive oil

                  1 tbsp Lemon juice

Blitz everything in a blender. Add more oil if the purée seems too thick and dry. Add salt, pepper and lemon juice, as needed.

Love this recipe, so good and so simple!! I would recommend making broad bean pesto too!!

Out of interest and whilst on the subject of broadies, has anyone ever grown martlock beans? I heard good things about them but wondered what they're like eating and growing wise?

                      Hi Rocketron,

you're right, we shouldn't eat raw beans, only broad beans aren't beans really :-)
Their Latin name is "Vicia faba", so they're more related to sweat peas than to beans.

                              Just wondering.

I've got a bamboo teepee earmarked for Runner, or Climbing French, Beans next year.

Am I able to sow Bored Beans (sorry, I couldn't resist) and harvest them in time to get Runners/Climbing French Beans in later on in the season?

My childhood experiences of Broad Beans wasn't good but I'm willing to give them a go as long as its not at the expense of beans I know I like.

                              Thanks

                              Alan

If you sow broadies now, Alan then you'll have a crop in May ish, so still plenty of time for runners etc.
