Oh and to your question, I'd sow direct if you're doing it as a green manure (they are a proper green manure and will be just as good as the ones marketed as such) as you'll be sowing thickly but in modules for eating so I get the best spacings. Don't suffer with mice though (or use slug pellets)

Dunno about the chitting first. This year mice removed quite a few young bb plants. I assume it was mice as I don't think pigeons dig little holes ...
Got something of a crop by putting pots with the bottoms cut out (previously used with tomatoes in grow bags to earth up around stems) and bottle cloches over the remaining seedlings and replanting some beans with simliar protection.
Now you've confused me two sheds.
Raw broad beans Alternatively why not try this simple dish. It is lovely to eat broad beans raw, with a little salt and olive oil along with salami, prosciutto and some feta. Lovely served with warm bread, straight from the oven.

Out of interest and whilst on the subject of broadies, has anyone ever grown martlock beans? I heard good things about them but wondered what they're like eating and growing wise?

you're right, we shouldn't eat raw beans, only broad beans aren't beans really :-)
Their Latin name is "Vicia faba", so they're more related to sweat peas than to beans.
