  • The keep fit side of growing your own.

I noticed that the local Gym were touting their business in the foyer at work the other day. They were offering big discounts an reduced fee membership for 3 months for full use of the gym equipment and instructors etc but the prices were still ridiculous.
It mind me about how much more I get from growing my own veg as I strolled past to see what was on offer in the canteen...lol .

A full growing season of hard graft has left me in excellent shape. I keep factor 50 sun cream in the shed but still my arms are as golden as them that spend a fortune in the tanning salons. All the turfing out of compost heaps and digging has toned my arms to perfection. Digging has toned my legs an all that yummy summer veg has been good for my waistline.
All that afor you even think about the stress busting head space it gives. The sort o therapy that would cost a fortune if it were in the hands o a trained professional.

All that Keep fit for the bargain price of £18 for the year with lots of fresh grown veg to feed me too.

    How's that for a bargain!!

Brilliant. But you have to remember that some people don't "do gardening"

You are right. The high calorific intake was not such a problem in the old days when people were working hard on the land, physical hard labour see to that. Now much employment is sat behind a desk an "doing gardening" is limited due to the amount of land or interest you have in it .
You would think that the up-surge in growing your own would affect the population accordingly.

Maybe that is why they were touting fro business eh!

Have to remember though, the gym is a different type of exercise all together. Can work in the garden all you want but you won't even come close to any true cardio training, muscle resistance training etc.

Gardening and growing things for an hour 3 times a week, is still 1000000 times better than spending the same amount of time in an artificially lit and airless room with music blerring through tannoys with everone gawking at you whilst you sweat and try not to be embarressing.....(This is a hypothetical scenario of course )
GYO is also good for the soul.

Have you tried digging for a few hours? I wager that if you put your back into it, it's as good as anything you can do at the gym

I do ! I was up there all day yesterday in the sunshine, and I even managed to pull a few buckets of weeds and read the weekend papers, eat some chips, have a few cold drinks, chat to the other plotters

I bike 3 miles there and 3 back, that's my cardio for the day. My gardening isn't really exercise at all, I don't do digging (bad back).
I miss the gym, I used to weight-train when the council subsidised membership. The cheapest deal now is £30 a month, which granted is only £1 a day if you go every day. I may take it up again just for the winter

I miss going to the gym.

Gardening is great in the summertime - it's bummocks in the winter. The plot didn't get me fit enough to do London to Brighton.

Both have their benefits - for different reasons. Comparing them is like comparing apples with apples.
