  • Your Favourite Potato variety

    just wondered what everyones favourite spud was!
    just that i have been growing a few heritage varieties this year and have been realy blown away with the real, good old fashioned Flavour.
    Our Choice?
    For Roasting, baking and Chips We both loved Salad Blue (for taste as well as the novel colour)
    For Mash- Shetland Black (Bit grey looking but what a flavour)

    Red Duke of York for an early, Kestrel for a second early, and now using Sarpo Mira for a late(very late) variety

      Charlotte for salads and Desiree does very well around here for mains

        Hi AP, What was the flavour of the Sarpo Mira like? Heard good reports as to Blight tollerance but one or two have complained about the Flavour in the press? I grow Maris piper as a bulk crop, but find they need regular spraying and are also prone to slug damage- looking for an alternative.

            The ones that did best for me this year - Nadine (2nd early) and Rooster (maincrop)

              I like those pink fir apple ones although they grow into all kinds of intereesting shapes. I did mayan gold this year as well - great for baking but distaterous boiled as they turn to mush in about 3 mins.

                Charlotte fresh is just amazing.

                I like rooster for the texture (roast/baked). Any home grown spud is so much more tastier than bought though, whichever ones I try I decide I like them... until I try another type heh

                  Epicure for earlies, Caitriona for 2nds (must be steamed not boiled as they turn to mush) and Cara for lates. Maris Pipers are great for chips but the slugs love them

                    never believe what you read in the papers mate . They taste like a good spud should taste. Nice dry flesh. No watery waxiness

                      Swift because they are extra early, Lady Christl harvested as a second early wonderful chips and Picasso for main crop they make great bakers.

                          Boring old Kestrel, Desiree and PFA all seem to do well in my soil....................and coincidentally, I enjoy eating all of them!

                              Now I have space () I want to grow some salad ones, probably charlotte.
                              I grew blue danube this year and am very impressed with them, tasty dry and cook well.
                              However I LOVE lady Balfour spuds for jackets so might give them ago ...too much choice!!!
