  • my overwintering onions have sprouted

I thought they were supposed to do that in early spring.

The warm weather last weekend has clearly confused them, but I assume this now means they'll start to grow a bit, get killed by the frost and not survive the winter?

That's what they are meant to do. We plant them around now, they develop roots and shoots, and sit quietly over winter. Then when the weather warms up again in spring they start growing again. Onions are hardy, so frost shouldn't harm them.

I haven't got mine in the ground yet, they're in modules until I get some time at the weekend. They have little green sprouts and have formed lovely little roots. Don't worry, they are doing what they are supposed to and will not be killed by frost or winter weather. Overwintering means just that.

Mine too, although mine are romping away in modules - bit worried that they might suffer from all this lush growth.
I might throw them outside and leave the door open to harden them off...sorry couldn't resist

Mine are double well hard already, but I was contemplating covering with a loose fleece sheet to discourage the flying rats & such

Mine have just started to sprout leaves too, looking well.
No need to worry about fleece with overwintered onion sets, mine came through last winter fine, so guess if they survived that they will survive anything, they are as hardy as nails!!

They didn't exist. They've all been bred for human consumption - they would never have evolved that way naturally. The price we pay for big, delicious veg is that we have to look after them.

Put about half my onions and garlic in the weekend before last. There was already signs of live this past weekend. Hoping the rain and gales will hold off long enough this weekend for me to put the rest in.

Troy onions planted and sprouted. Three heads of garlic, split up and cloves set into seed tray.
Still got another three heads of garlic to plant and my Senshyu onion sets as well.

Whilst we are on about alliums, been busy pricking out leek plantlets and torpedo onion plantlets into trays in the greenhouse this evening!
