You're not supposed to but many do. It won't be certified disease free and may not be suited to our growing conditions but I've read of folk doing it on here with no problems. You can get proper stuff for planting from garden centres but it's more expensive. Up to you really.

Can I suggest you do the little things that people suggested, and then (if you haven't already) get hold of a decent "how to grow vegeables" book and learn it (almost off by heart!) over the windeter. My current favourites are:
Joy Larkham - Grow Your Own Vegetables (if you buy only one buy this, but no fruit)
John Seymour - the Self Sufficient Gardener (This will have to be second hand - avoid the "New Self Sufficient Gardener)
The RHS Growing Vegetables (no fruit)
Joe Hashman: A pocket guide to the Vegetable Garden (This what to do month by month - I think you need one of the other books with this)
And for interesting and exciting ideas, Charles Dowling - Organic Gardening the natural no dig way or any of his other books.
And don't forget to plan your gardening next year and put your seed order in early! Good luck and have fun.
