I've just pulled up my Autumn King's - sown 11th July - and they're just normal, not big. The Chantenay Red Cored are HUGE though

I sowed all my main crop carrots back in April. Had rubbish luck with them as the weather was too dry so I sowed again to fill the gaps in during May. Am now just starting to pull them and they're the biggest I've ever grown! All varieties, Autumn King, Purple Haze and especially the Jaune Obtuse de Doubs, pulled one of them today that will be enough for 3 people as a side veg. OH was so impressed he took a photo.

However, the first year I grew carrots at the plot I didn't thin properly as I was too nervous about attracting carrot fly and I ended up with a lot of very spindly roots due to the competition for water / nutrients. I now sow a small pinch (2 or 3 seeds) at the final spacing distance apart so thinning is very easy.

Re time of sowing, in a good year you can get away with the latest dates but it's got to be perfect, you'll do a lot better on average sowing earlier.

OK, kept forgetting to post - doesn't look quite so big on the photo and we ate it before we weighed it but it was mighty tasty and am pretty sure it's the biggest one I've grown to date

It's a beast Alison. Mine are mostly carrot fly ridden, and titchy, despite covering them. They must have dug their way in, great escape style, but backwards.

There was a bit of damage on it but that was only finger nail deep and I covered it up for photographic effect (although the very green top is all too evident ) Oh and they're not all that size by any means but I do seem to have less roots but larger this year and have no recollection of sowing further apart or thinning more.
