  • Quince Day!

Spent the day cutting up a bumper crop of quinces and boiling in cinnamon water. Hopefully I'll get a chance to squeeze the juices out through butter muslin tomorrow and add a lemon and crushed ginger root before I make the jelly! Yum yum!

I was given loads of them a few weeks ago. Have made quince jelly, membrillo and quince vodka. Am hoping that I get a load more next year as they made the whole house smell beautiful.

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

I want to purchase a quince - want a fairly established size tree though and not a tiddler. Does anyone have any ideas where I may find such a purchase please?!

No, but I was interested to hear on GQT y'day that you can take hardwood cuttings from quince very successfully ~ no need for grafting.
I've just pruned and composted mine, but next year I might root a few

I hope I might get a few Quinces next year - I planted my tree, as a bare-root maiden on semi-dwarfing rootstock, in 2008, so it'll be its fourth full year. It's 'Isfahan'.

I don't know anybody with one but that does sound a good plan. I sent for DT Brown book and they have quince trees for sale, but it does not state size, plus I really like to look plants etc. over before buying.

Here. This is where I bought mine. As you can see, they do various rootstocks for various sizes of mature tree.

Got up at 5.30 this morning to get the jelly bottled up. The beautiful deep red amber colour is amazing!

I think I'll keep the jars on the kitchen window ledge so they light up when the winter sun shines

Not so far, no - a few blossoms, but no fruit. However, bare-root maidens are supposed to take four years or so to start fruiting, so I'm hopeful for next year.
