Haw haw, thorny though your comments are I think you are hedging your bets. Yew won't stay poplar if you aldernate between being serious and humorous. It's plane to see there's no raoul prize at stake here, so I suppose there's no point rowan about it; people will just get sycamore holly pointless discussion, it does nobody any service.

                Ok folks,pay attention!

I like the idea of wooden seed trays or modules.
How about.............. you construct a seed tray with a 6mm drilled exterior plywood base, sides to be made of 70mm X 10 mm latts.

A single insert with as many modules as you desire can then be made from strips of 6mm ply X 70mm wide 'toothed' together and either glued or left so that modules can be stripped down. This would mean there was no need for a removeable bottom and would make the tray stronger and multifunctional (different sized inserts could be added).............Wallah!

                  Yay Snadger! Brilliant.

Can I do the same with cardboard then? Might be a single use jobby, but it would keep me quiet on a dark winter evening.
Whether you think you can or whether you think you can't, you are probably right.

Can't see why not? Wouldn't try moving it around once its full of compost and watered though!
You could of course just make some cardboard inserts for a normal plastic tray..............origami modules anyone!

Or you could forget about having proper modules and use soil blocks instead, the roots will naturally be air pruned and will help keep the block together. You can even make your own soil blocker

or buy one such as these Soil Block Makers - Johnny's Selected Seeds

Thanks for that, JP. Being Aberdonian, I rather fancy the idea of using fresh air - it being free - to do the work. However, given my natural clumsiness, I think soil blocks are going to have to await the construction of my greenhouse.
Well....would you adam and eve it...my job yesterday was to smash up a three legged dressing table...full of lovely deep, wooden drawers !
So now I need to get the countersink out (who needs drills ?) and find some 6mm ply.
It's boring, but I must ap-ply myself....(Please, veggiechicken, let the drawers thing slide !)
