They're all mental!! I've had 6 in various colours - I wouldn't have any other breed. These 2 are "rescue" ones. Now how did we get here from vegetables!

I have been a member of the NVS for a while now and I can honestly say it is terrific value for money. The website does a good job of detailing the aims of the society but needs to publicise the benefits of membership a bit more. The forum is a fantastic font of knowledge and replies to questions you have about growing or showing are sent within minutes! The District Association meetings have some splendid speakers and are all over the country. The simply veg magazine is great for anyone growing and showing veg, plus you can buy DVDs and growing leaflets to compliment what i've detailed above.
The camaraderie within the society is also great... this is a fantastic society to belong to.

Scarey, I'm happy to be the first NVS member to confirm that the GYO Forum is magnificent. I absolutley love it. Believe it or not, I've also been very pleased to see the negative comments about the NVS on this thread because it has given us some very good pointers as to what we need to do to make our Society more attractive to others. We know we have a lot to offer, it's how we make others aware and how we change some mistaken conceptions that we need to address. The fact that the comments made are coming from fellow gardeners makes the feedback so much more valuable.

I know that Sewer Rat wasn't thinking along these lines with his OP but nonetheless, his questions have illicited valuable responses. We know we have to change things and now we know some of the things we need to change .

And I'll be the second ! Having been a member of the Vine since it was itself a seedling, I am happy to still find that it is going strong, especially as so many seem to have falln by the wayside. Thanks for all the comments re the NVS. As AP says, the Society should take your comments on board and they are indeed good pointers for the Society to work on.
I was really hoping for this kind of response, ie both positive and negative, as I am sure to come up against some of the samme when I try to get the DA up and running. Once again, the Vine has come up trumps.

Came across this thread when looking for something else. Just for everyone's info, Dave and his colleagues in the North of Scotland managed to get their District Association up and running last year and in fact had their first AGM yesterday.

I joined a couple of months ago although already a member of the NSALG through the allotment. I like their magazine for vegetable growing tips and especially the article about growing strawberries in grobags which I'm going to try with some fresh runners I've ordered. I had a lot of strawberry beds all now coming to an end and the advice helps with the problem of finding new areas that haven't had strawberries in before. I thought the magazine was more informative than the NSALG's.
