Seeing Zaz's thread about sowing bush tomatoes on 22nd December and having been told by an allotmenteer that he always sows his onions on Boxing Day, is there anything else that can be sown during December?

Sowing at Christmas?

I start my chillies off at the start of jan, as well as my toms - toms are alright because you can bury them deeper as they get leggy - they'll root from the stems.
Chillies tend to be a bit leggy sown at the start of the year, but I have foil behind them to reflect as much light as possible back to them.
Edit: leggy, as in long, weak seedlings - looking for light, basically... due to the short day lengths we're currently having!Last edited by chris; 26-11-2011, 06:34 PM.

If you have lights and a heated propgator you could sow pretty much everything - it's not the sowing that is the problem, it's the fact that when they are ready to plant out the weather is still too cold for them, so you have to keep potting up into bigger pots and kep the heat on, so it can become expensive tooRat

Ditto what Sewer rat said.
Started Toms and Chilles off in Jan this year. Although they grow on the window sill, they where very leggy. Brought a couple of grow lights, which did the job, but I ran out of space before the weather warmed up. I'll wait untill March before sowing.Sometimes you just have to scratch that itch and get dirt under your finger nails.

I know exactly what you mean about getting bored! I've just seen that a packet of parsley seeds says "sow August to February indoors". I just happen to have some seed compost and pots in the kitchen..... think I'll give it a go! With 1000 seeds to a packet there's not much to lose if it doesn't work.
