A lot is down to finding varieties which suit your soil, the same variety grown on different soils, sometimes even different plots on the same site will vary tremendously in size and flavour.
I always grow a few heritage varieties, like shetland black, salad blue etc, but for general use I grow Rocket-First early
maris peer -second early
Maris piper- Main
As I said, very much personal taste, but I find these three crop well, have good yield and excellent flavour IMHO"... discipline is what the world needs today and etiquette, you know. For one of the noblest things a man can do is to do the best he can, yeah ..."

I agree with all that has been said above particularly about conditions.
After trying many varieties I settled on Swift first early, Lady Christl which is a first early but I leave in the ground and use as a second early and Picasso for my main crop. They seem to suit the way I grow and give me consistant yields.
