  • squash variety evaluation

Haven't been around for a good while so don't know if you've had much feedback on different squash varieties.

This year I grew the old standards Crown Prince & Uchiki Kuri
Both cropped reasonably well and are superb quality for eating.

New variety for this year was Golden Nugget - anyone else grown it?

I chose it because I had been looking for bush varieties - most squash take up far too much room. AS a bush it worked well, taking up about the same space as a courgette plant. It also cropped very well with an average of 7 fruits per plant - ranging from cricket ball to bowling ball in size although mostly at the larger end.
The problem I am finding is with the extra tough skin - it's virtually impossible to peel!
I've broken 2 peelers already. Now I am sticking to cutting in half and baking in the skin, either scooping out flesh after cooking or stuffing and serving in the shell. I am quite pleased with the eating quality and will definately be growing again.

    Q. Anyone else grown Golden Nugget? What did you think of it?

    Q. Any other reccomendations for bush squash?

    I love Golden Nugget.

For peeling any hard squash, microwave it for a few mins first

I don't peel now, I just chop them into chunks and slice the skin off as I go. A good sharp knife helps.

Leave the skin on. Peeling or slicing wastes too much of the flesh!! Cut into quarters and then microwave in an OPEN container for 5-10 mins, then scrape off the flesh with a spoon. Easy.
Golden Nugget is about the only good tasting bush variety that I have come across.

I did grow it yes, but the fruits were stolen so I'm not sure how they were! I'll be growing it again next year.

I may give the Golden Nugget a try now I have took over the other half of my lottie, I didn't have any luck this year with squashes, I couldn't get the seeds to germinate so I got six plant from the nursery and only got two squashes from six plants, I'll try again next year...

Awwwww interesting! I may well try this myself next year! Thanks for the tip.... I did a couple of Jack be little in pots this year and they were nice, think they may have sprawled a lot further though if given more space! I also liked patty pan - not sure if you would call it a bush variety though...

                I LOOOOOOVE Squash!

Does anyone know of any other bush squash varieties?

I've tried Table Queen in the past and was not overly impressed

I also grew Bush Buttercup this year and it produced good sized, typical buttercup fruit but only one per plant

Dont know if these fall into the bush variety but, Anna Swartz Hubbard and Blue Banana spring to mind.

Sorry but neither of these are bush varieties, in fact AS Hubbard is particularly rampant.

What I'm looking for are real bush varieties which grow like a courgette plant
I grew 5 Golden Nugget and 2 bush Buttercup in the same space that would have grown 2 and harvested 38 Squash instead of 6. I would just like to try more varieties

Have you thought of growing them vertically/over arches etc?
